Basics Home Decor TIPS to DIY
Reduced stays are what abounds in homes today. It is a recurring problem that people ask us almost daily, so that, although it is impossible for us to raise the ceiling and move the walls a few centimeters, at least we have the feeling that it is bigger.
But as in everything, there are certain tricks and small ways to produce that effect in the eye of the beholder, and that is where our work lies, in decorating so that it produces a certain effect, in this case that a room may seem larger than What is it.
No need to spend a fortune or renovate the furniture, just by applying some of these tips you will be able to visually expand the desired space.
- Choose pieces that fill the room. In small living rooms, choosing a large sofa over several small pieces actually lessens the appearance of clutter and makes a room appear larger.
- Use paint or wallpaper on the ceiling to make the room appear taller. Having something draw the gaze to the ceiling of a room makes it appear larger in our appreciation of space. For this we can paint it in color or use a wallpaper with different motifs, preferably in light colors, for the point that we will see below.
- Use light colors on the walls and on the floor. Although it is true that dark colors make a room seem more cozy, they also absorb light instead of reflecting it, making the space seem smaller. That is why it is advisable to opt for floors in light colors, be it parquet, tile or vinyl. The same is applicable to the color of the walls. This does not mean that you have to paint all white, we can use the color but in light or pastel tones.
- Use stripes to lengthen the space. Just like vertical stripes on clothing make us more stylish, vertical stripes on rugs make the room appear longer.
- Leave the windows uncovered to give the environment more depth. That the more light it gives a feeling of spatial depth. If you are concerned about the loss of privacy, choose light fabrics that let the light in instead of blackout curtains.
- Abuse hidden storage and multi-use items. Coffee tables with hidden compartments to store things you do not want to see inside, or ottomans, armchairs with an interior compartment that serve as a seat and as a wardrobe.
- Use several shades of the same color to create a unit. Using different shades of the same color on the wall, carpet, and furniture, creates a visual coherence that makes the space bigger. It is not necessary to buy new furniture, adding cushions, pillows or accessories of the same shade can give it the same effect.
- Do not place furniture next to the wall to create the illusion of spaciousness. Bringing the furniture together against the walls makes the whole look tight. Even leaving a few inches between the wall and large furniture can make the space seem more open. If you think that’s a way to waste space, try docking an object like a console or bookshelf.
- Buy glass or methacrylate objects. Objects made of glass or methacrylate are in vogue and may have an added function, that of not occupying visual space, it will appear that they are not.
- Color-code the shelves to create a structured look. Whether it’s size, color, or type, grouping a set of items together and intentionally arranging them makes them more streamlined and lightweight. This works for books, shoes, or anything else that is visible in a home.
- Use rugs to separate a room into small spaces. Especially useful in studios and offices, this creates the appearance of having more than one space in a large room
- Use translucent or failing light colored shower curtains. It is a way to remove obstacles and let the light through.
- Hang bookshelves near the ceiling to attract glances up. One more way to create the optical illusion that we talked about in point 2. It is clearly not the most practical way to pick up the objects that we put on that shelf, but it is a way to maximize vertical space.
- Use dramatic art pieces to make a room look more spacious. Choose large pieces that produce that optical effect.
- Get rid of ceiling lamps. They only focus the light towards a specific point. Instead, use a few smaller lamps to reflect the light around and draw your gaze to the entire room.
- Furniture with exposed legs is the key. Instead of a sofa with skirts or square chairs, larger pieces with exposed legs are perfect for small spaces.
- Strategically place mirrors to create an optical illusion. Putting a mirror in front of a window is the best way to reflect light and make the room appear larger.
And finally a final tip: break the rules, just because it is a living room does not mean that there has to be a sofa, a table and a television. Furniture and unexpected decoration will make a room more personal and fun.
